In 1987, the company moved into a built-to-suit production and administration building. With the increasing importance of the micro chip, a production line for its embedding into the card was installed in 1993 and produced about 2 million cards in the first year. At the same time foreign markets, especially in Eastern Europe were opened up for export. From 1994 to 2007, Oesterreichische Nationalbank (the Central Bank of Austria) was sole owner of Austria Card.
The electronic purse QUICK was developed and introduced across Austria for the first time in 1995. A team of specialists was also established for the programming of SIM cards for mobile telephones, and as a competence centre for electronic payment transactions, Austria Card is developing its own EMV mask (ACE) for use as a standard solution together with its market partners.
Some 70 million cards are produced per year with a team of approximately 300 employees. 70% of the cards produced are exported, primarily to Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East.
In April 2003 Austria Card purchased 30% of the shares of the Scandinavian "All Card Service Center - ACSC". In 2007, these shares were traded into Xpon shares and finally sold to Oberthur Card Systems in 2008.
In 2005 Austria Card purchased 50% of the GNC-Card Services in Germany. After restructuring of Austria Card's foreign participations GNC remains 100% self-owned and continues to be Austria Card's sales partner for the German market.
